Mak was not charged with espionage, however, because the information he attempted to export to China was not classified. This case is similar to the Wen Ho Lee case several years ago. Lee was falsely accused of being a spy and stealing the “crown jewels” of the US technology, which was actually in the public domain. The the FBI also accused Mak of lying during the initial interrogation but failed to record the session. U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney maintained that "I don't know how much damage he did to us," but handled out the lengthy term to warn China not to "send agents here to steal America's military secrets." Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates are encouraging US researchers to do what Mak did so US can "track Chinese military and technological developments.” May 02 祝愤青爷爷生日快乐 Happy Birth day!
On May 4, 1919, thousands university students in Beijing protested the Versailles Treaty awarding Shandong province to Japan. They shouted slogans such as "Struggle for the sovereignty externally, get rid of the national traitors at home", beaten Zhang Zongxiang, then Chinese Ambassador to Japan, and set the house of Cao Rulin, who played a major role in accepting the Twenty-one Demands, on fire. Demonstrations and strikes spread to other parts of the country, and led to a nationwide boycott of Japanese goods. It can be said that the May Fourth Movement marked the birth of Chinese Fenqing (angry youth). Two years later, the Chinese Communist Party was born.
It should be noted that major western democracies (Britain, France, and the United States) did nothing to help China at the Versailles Conference, despite strong pleas by Chinese diplomats and the fact that China sent over 140,000 laborers to help the Allies during the war. Sometimes you will see she stands on her left leg and spins to the right. Sometimes you will see the opposite. It is not a brain test as some people have claimed. To help people who can’t see the reversal, Look at one of the the two images below (cover the other one if needed).
April 17 Baby and Troops February 07 A heck of a Life: Laugh, Think and Cry
55 days before his death, Jim Valvano spoke at the inaugural ESPY Awards to accept the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. He said,
"Now, I'm fighting cancer, everybody knows that. People ask me all the time about how you go through your life and how's your day, and nothing is changed for me. As Dick said, I'm a very emotional, passionate man. I can't help it. That's being the son of Rocco and Angelina Valvano. It comes with the territory. We hug, we kiss, we love. And when people say to me how do you get through life or each day, it's the same thing. To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.
(Randy's medical update page and his summary of the adventure ).
TheLastLecture.com.
Happy Chinese New Year!
October 07 The last lecture
斯瓦茨(Morrie Schwartz), 他在一九九四年罹患肌萎性侧索硬化(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS; also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Some people compared Randy's lecture to Lou Gehrig's "Luckiest Man Alive" speech.)
"No one is all evil. Everybody has a good side, just keep waiting, it will come out". I’m dying and I'm having fun. And I'm going to keep having fun every day I have left. Because there's no other way to play it. Well said.
